Kiss Here lettering on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a man's upper chest, with his dark t-shirt pulled back by one hand. The tattoo reads KISS HERE in two lines of thin, even black linework, with the letters spaced loosely across the skin. The image is greyscale, and the composition is cropped close around the shoulder, chest and watch on the wrist.

You are the only one left on Gull Street who still sets type by hand, so when the ferry company wants two hundred cards for Saturday's crossing, the job comes to you. The capital K has run out. Mr Abernethy at the chandlery wants his window sign by morning, and the tin has been rattled so often that half the sorts are bent. You lay the words backwards on the stick, the way Mrs Pryce taught you before her hands gave out, and you space the letters loosely, because there is only one S left and you refuse to waste it.

Your brother Dan brings the tea at eleven and reads the proof over your shoulder. He snorts and says nobody buys a crossing from a card that tells them what to do with their face. You tell him to mind the ink. But when you pull the first print and lift it off the bed, the two lines look less like an order than a dare, and you find yourself leaving it on the rack to dry longer than you need to.
By Saturday the cards are tucked into every shop window from the slipway to the Crown, and the harbour master has complained twice about the lettering. Nobody complains about the crossing. On Monday a woman from the cold store comes in with a scrap of paper and asks whether you could run her a small one for her kitchen, the same spacing, the S dropped a little, as if the words were leaning towards something.
