Forgive lettering on an upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A man in a white V-neck t-shirt raises one arm, showing the word forgive in small, dark, serif lettering on the outer upper arm. The face is cropped out, and only the chin and beard are visible at the top of the frame. The photograph is black and white with soft, even lighting and a shallow focus on the arm, with a black mug held in the foreground.

Dear Tom,

The 6.12 from Crewe was late again, so I have been sitting on the bench under the clock with this letter for most of an hour. Mum asked me to post it from town, but I wanted it stamped with the station's own dust, the way you used to come home with grit in your collars. The porter, Eddie Marsh, says the canopy ironwork is older than both of us put together and that nobody has painted it since the war.
You will want to know why I came at all. It was the card you sent at Christmas, the one with no return address, only a postmark from Carlisle and a single word in your square capitals across the back. I kept turning it over on the kitchen table until the ink felt like it was pressing through to my palm.
I am not writing to argue about the lamp, or the Vauxhall, or whatever it was we said on the platform in 1998. I have carried it long enough. Come home on the next train that stops here. The timetable is pinned by the ticket hatch, and Eddie says he will hold the door for you if you miss the last one.
Yours, before anything else, Nell
