The abbot found the cookbook open on the bench while Brother Anselm was still at the second psalm. He lifted it, turned it upside down, and frowned at the pictures as though they might be easier to scold that way. There was the oil jug with its chipped lip, a bowl of cracked wheat, a pomegranate split open like a lamp, a green pepper with its stalk still on, and a trout from the mill stream lying curled in the margin with its tail flicked up.

That winter the snow closed the pass for eleven weeks. The flour ran low, then the oil, and the young novice Matthias, who could not read a word, took the book down from its shelf because the trout was the only thing on the page he recognised. He cooked it the way the picture showed, scattering the pomegranate seeds over the top, and carried the bowl to the abbot's cell without a word. The abbot ate it standing up, then sat down, then asked for a second bowl.

In spring the book was back on the bench, open to the same page. Beside the pepper, in a small and careful hand, someone had drawn a spoon.
