Yarn ball and crochet hook on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a rounded ball of yarn with wound lines across its surface, with a crochet hook curving out from its lower right side. It is drawn in thin, dark black outline with little or no shading, so the forms read as simple line work. The wrist is shown close up against a wooden floor, with a yellow and white striped sleeve and another person's hand holding the arm at the top of the frame.

Margaret Oakes had logged eleven umbrellas, one stuffed owl and a tin of travel sweets before the wool arrived. It came on a Tuesday in a carrier bag marked Platform Four: a fat grey ball with a steel hook pushed through its middle and a few loops of stitching trailing off the end, like a sentence someone had stopped halfway through.

She held it under the strip light and turned it slowly. The rows were even and the tension tight. Whoever had been making it knew what they were doing, and had put it down mid-row, which was the part Margaret understood best. She had once left a whole winter's knitting on a train seat and never gone back for it. The hook had a bend near the neck, as if it had been pulled through something stubborn one time too many.
On Thursday a young man came to the counter asking after a grey bag. He described it wrongly, said there was a dog lead inside, so Margaret made him describe the stitches instead. He said he didn't know what stitches were. She asked whether he had a nan, and he went red and said yes. Then she would hold it for a week, Margaret said, and he could bring his nan's pattern in if he wanted it finished.
Eight days later the ball was back on the shelf, and the trailing stitches had grown a full row. Tucked under the hook was a luggage tag in biro: Nan says the next row is a purl. Margaret read it twice, then put the kettle on, because it was the first thing to come back to the lost property office in years on purpose.
