Kitchen utensils tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Four kitchen utensils are drawn in thin black outline on the forearm: a spoon, a whisk, a rolling pin and a spatula, arranged diagonally from top to bottom. The linework is clean and fine, with only the small heart on the rolling pin filled in red. The arm rests on a grey bag covered in printed cartoon comic pages against a grass background.

The rolling pin had been Maureen's before it was Dev's, and the little red heart on its barrel had been there so long that nobody in the flat could say who had painted it. Dev found it wedged behind the bread bin on the Tuesday the landlord came about the damp, along with a whisk with two bent wires and a wooden spoon that had clearly been used to stir paint.

The baking competition at the parish hall was on Saturday. Dev had entered the Victoria sponge twice before and lost both times to a retired surveyor called Gordon Pike, who measured his crumb with a ruler. This year Dev intended to win with the old tools, on the reasoning that a sponge beaten with a whisk that had seen thirty years of Sunday mornings must taste better than one made with something from a catalogue.
On the morning of the judging the sponge sank in the middle, as sponges do when the oven door is opened too early, and Dev stood in the hall holding a cake that looked like a crater. Gordon Pike wandered over, peered at it, and then, to Dev's astonishment, admitted he had made the same mistake in 1987 and never told a soul. He pressed a jar of his blackcurrant jam into Dev's hands and walked off before anyone could thank him.
The judges gave the ribbon to Gordon for the jam. Dev came away with a rosette for the entry the crowd liked best, which the organiser had written out on a card in pencil. Back at the flat, Dev put the spatula in its drawer beside the heart-marked pin and thought that Maureen would have called it a fair result, and Dev was happy to agree.
