Kitten face on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a kitten's head tilted slightly, shown on a pale forearm beside Christmas bells, a red flower and pine sprigs on a wooden surface. The linework is fine and the fur is built up with soft grey shading, with the eyes picked out in teal and the nose in pink. The design sits in the centre of the frame with plenty of space around it.

The bell on the kitten's collar was the only thing Ottilie could hear by the third hour below the Col. Snow came sideways off the ridge and took the mules' breath, took the lantern's glow, took the track itself, so that she walked by the feel of stone through her boots and the faint brass tinkle somewhere ahead of her.

The kitten had come to her at Pradel's inn, found in a flour sack behind the stables, grey-striped and all ears. Old Hob the carrier had tied a bell to its neck with red wool, the way the valley folk tie bells to anything that might wander off. Ottilie had carried it inside her coat since morning, which was foolish, because it had scratched at the lining the whole way up and she had not once been able to get it to settle.
When the wind dropped for a breath, she heard a second bell, the chapel's, rung slow from the far side of the pass. The kitten wriggled free, tipped its head at the sound, and leapt into the drifts. Ottilie followed the small jingle off the path, floundering, cursing the mules for staying where they were, until her boot found nothing but air. The track she had been trusting ended a yard from her toes, where the ridge had sheared away in the night.
At dawn Pradel hung the little bell on a nail above the stove, and the kitten slept beneath it with its head cocked to one side, as if it were still listening for the way down.
