Black and white cat face on the wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a cat's face, shown front on, with black and white fur, bright green eyes and pink inner ears and nose. The shading is soft and illustrative, with smooth colour transitions across the white patches. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin of the inner forearm, against a dark blurred background and a black and white checked sleeve.

Mind the stove, it spits when the wind goes round, and that's the only warning you'll get from this galley. Now where was I. Ah, the Marigold, the year the cat came aboard in a tea chest at Valparaíso. Nobody owned her. She was black and white like a badly laid table, with one green eye that looked at you and one that looked past you at the sea, and she walked the rail in the dark as if she'd paid for the rail herself.

The captain, Hollis Pardew, said a cat was bad luck and then fed her from his own plate for eleven months. We sailed round the Horn with her curled in the bread locker, and the bread came out with fur in it, and nobody complained. When the foremast cracked off the Falklands and we lay three days in a grey sea with the pumps going, it was that cat who sat on the hatch and stared at the water like she was counting it. Pardew swore she'd seen the leak before the carpenter did. The carpenter swore the same about himself, and I still don't know which of them was lying.
We made Bristol with the sails in rags. Pardew died the winter after, in his own bed, which is more than most captains manage. The cat went ashore with the second mate's sister and lived to be nineteen, sleeping on a windowsill over the Avon. Last I heard, she had a pink nose and a temper. Pour yourself the rest of that tea. The kettle's still hot, and the story's finished.
