Kitty on a yarn ball with knitting needles
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon white kitty with a red bow sits on a teal ball of yarn, with two knitting needles pushed into the top and a strand of yarn trailing below. Pink and light blue shading gives the yarn texture, and small pink and black stars surround the design. The tattoo is centred on the lower stomach, with the navy waistband of the trousers visible at the bottom of the frame.

Edie Dunstan had the needles stuck through the ball of teal wool, and the white cat with the red bow had already dragged a length of it under the dresser. "That's for Tom Hallam's jumper," she told it. The cat blinked its black-dot eyes and kept pulling. Outside, the hooter at Ashgill Pit gave its long note over the rows of wet terrace, and the slag heaps steamed in the dawn.

She had been knitting for the men since the strike of forty-two, when the ration books stretched to socks and nothing else. Each lad who went down the shaft came to her step for new cuffs. Tom had broken his wrist in March and told nobody, but she knew from the way he held his tea. The cat followed the yarn across the flags, through the scullery and out under the back gate, the strand unspooling down the lane behind it like a dropped thread of cold light.
Edie went after them with her pinny still on. At the pit gate the wool ran between the boots of the men queuing for the cage, and each one stopped to look at it. Tom stopped last. He bent and lifted the teal strand off the cobbles, wound it twice round his good hand, and the cat sat on his boot looking pleased with itself.
"Right," Edie said. "You'll wear it, then." Tom nodded. She saw that he had understood the whole of it, the wool and the wrist and the cat, and she did not ask him to say more. By dinner time the cuff was on his wrist, the bow was back on the cat, and the needles stood in the empty ball on the dresser, waiting for the next one.
