Hello Kitty in a nurse's cap with crossed syringes
Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of Hello Kitty wearing a pink nurse's cap with a red bow, set in front of crossed green and blue syringes and a green ribbon. Small red hearts and green dots trail upwards above the head, and a single red heart sits below the syringes. Bold black outlines and soft blended shading give the design a bright, cartoon-like finish on pale skin.

The last needle-wife in Harrowmere kept her syringes in a biscuit tin on the sill, two of them crossed under the lid like knitting needles. Every spring she lifted them out and held them to the light to see if they still wanted to work. Her daughter Mirra thought this foolish, but Mirra had been born in the fog year and did not remember the sky being blue, so she did not argue.

The cat came up out of the silt of the old harbour, painted on the curved lid of a drowned machine that the fishermen dragged onto the shingle one winter. It was white, with a round face and no mouth, a red bow on one ear and a pink cap on its head. Nobody could say what it was. The needle-wife said it had come to be seen, and she pinned its cap to her own hair and wore it every day after.
When the green fog rolled in from the east, it got into the well water and into the goats. The needle-wife climbed the hill at dusk with the tin under her arm. She stood in the thickest of the murk, pricked the fog where it lay heaviest, and drew it out drop by drop, the way you would bleed a splinter. Each drop went into the tin and turned, as it cooled, into a small red heart that knocked against the lid.
She came down three days later with her hands shaking and the tin rattling. Mirra opened the lid on the kitchen table. Forty hearts rose in a thread and drifted out through the window, looking for the sick. Mirra watched them go and understood, at last, why the cat had no mouth. It had nothing to say that the hearts would not say better.
