Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the head of Hello Kitty in bold black outline with a white face, black eyes and whiskers, and a red bow on top of the head. Small five-pointed stars in pink, teal and black cluster on the left side of the character. The skin is pale and the design sits centrally on the image against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nineteen days out of Rotterdam, with the Atlantic the colour of wet cement, Ruth Okonedo ran out of anything to do with her hands. The only red paint left on the Marisol Bay was the lacquer in the bosun's tin, meant for the lifeboat davits, and she carried it up the ladder to the steel wall beside the galley hatch.

She painted a white cat's head there, round as a dinner plate, with ears like folded envelopes and a red bow perched above the left one. She gave it three whiskers a side and a small mouth that looked faintly surprised. Down its flank she scattered stars in pink, teal and black, the pink from a stub of nail varnish she found under a bunk, the teal from a biro that gave out halfway through the word 'Thursday'.

By morning the cook had stopped whistling and the second engineer was photographing it on his phone. Harkness, the bosun, came up at six with a scraper and a face like a shut door, and spent an hour on the paint without shifting more than a few flakes. He swore at the bulkhead and went below. Ruth took her tea to the rail and watched the sun come up over the bow.

When she came back that evening, someone had gone over the outline in black marker, lightly, the way you might trace a child's drawing. Beside the stars a new one had appeared, and the next night another. By the time the ship docked in Halifax there were eleven, and nobody aboard would say whose hand had drawn them.
