A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the last bobbin between her teeth when the lock-keeper's boy came running along the towpath to say the Mary Ellen had snagged her rudder on the weir cable. Her grandmother's pillow sat under a cloth on the cabin table, honeycomb mesh half worked across it, and the scrolled roses were not yet pinned. She tied off the thread, wrapped the lace in tissue and went out into the drizzle with her boots unlaced.

Her father was already waist-deep in the brown water with a boathook, swearing at a knot of wire that had no business being there. Gulls argued on the lock gates. Nell knelt on the wet planks and held the lamp while he worked, and neither of them mentioned the regatta committee, who wanted a crown for their queen by Saturday and had been told by Nell that they would have one. Nobody in Hythe made lace any more, except her, and her grandmother had always said a crown was only a net that someone had decided to believe in.

The wire came free with a shriek. Her father laughed, water running from his sleeves, and Nell ran home along the cut with the lamp swinging. By the time the lock had filled she had three hours of light left. She pinned the roses, then the scrolls, then sewed jet beads on fine thread in swags beneath the base, finishing with two teardrop drops from her grandmother's tin.

At dusk the regatta queen came aboard in borrowed wellingtons to try it on. It sat crooked, and Nell straightened it with two fingers. The girl held it up to the lamp and peered through the mesh at the water beyond the window. "I can see right through it," she said, puzzled. Nell thought that was exactly the right answer.
