Ladybird and daisy on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo shows a red ladybird with black spots next to a white daisy with a yellow centre. Black linework forms the daisy outline, a curved stem and a swirl beside the ladybird. The colours are flat, with the red and yellow standing out against the pale skin, and the design sits alone in the centre of the frame.

Nobody at the reunion remembered the bet except me, which is why I ended up by the coat rack with Dennis Hollis, who had been in the year below and now sold conservatories. He asked what we'd all been like at eleven. I said I was the girl who kept a ladybird in a Tupperware pot under her desk for a whole term, and Mrs Okafor had let me on one condition: I never told the class what it ate.

The ladybird was called Mrs Bunce, after the dinner lady, and she lived on greenfly picked from the roses behind the bike sheds. Sophie Dunn bet me a scratch-and-sniff strawberry that Mrs Bunce would climb onto a daisy and stay put for a count of ten. I lost the first three attempts. On the fourth, the ladybird walked up the white petals, paused at the yellow middle as if she'd been told it mattered, and sat there while Sophie counted aloud until the bell went.

Sophie was across the hall now, laughing with a man holding a plate of vol-au-vents. She caught my eye and mouthed the word ten, and we both laughed, because we had never settled the bet. That afternoon I had pressed the daisy between the pages of my atlas, and it was still there when I got home, flat and brown, its centre gone the colour of weak tea. Mrs Bunce had flown off with the bell and nobody ever saw her again.

When I went to fetch my coat, Sophie was waiting by the door with a paper napkin. On it she had drawn a ladybird, a daisy and a curl of stem, and underneath, in her round school hand, she had written: Ten. Draw. I still have it in my coat pocket, folded in four, next to the strawberry sticker she finally handed over.
