Small ladybird tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon-style ladybird with a black outline and two curled antennae sits on the skin. The body is split into a red half with a black spot and a white half with a black dot, drawn in simple, solid lines. The tattoo is shown small in the centre of a close, softly lit frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the first ladybird on the lamp room glass on the third night of the gale, a red speck pressed against the outside pane where the wind has shoved it, its legs working at nothing. Mrs Pryce from the cottage below had said ladybirds meant fair weather coming, and you had laughed at her, because nothing about the sea at Scarrow Head had been fair since October.

You carry the brass polish and the soft cloth up the spiral stair each dawn, and by the fourth morning there are eleven of them wedged in the lead between the panes, all facing the same way like sailors looking for land. You count them twice. The lamp must be trimmed before dusk and you cannot stop to rescue every one, so you open the small vent and tap them loose, watching them open their wings and drop into the grey.

The one you keep is the one that will not move. It has a black dot on its white half and a red half with a single spot, as though someone began to paint it and then changed their mind. You bring it down in your palm to the kitchen and set it on the windowsill, where the beam from the sweep falls across it every ninety seconds.

When the wind drops on the seventh morning, the ladybird is still there, and so are you, and the sea below the rocks has turned the colour of pewter. You open the window and hold out your hand. It walks to the edge of your thumb, considers the drop, and goes anyway, a small red comma lifting over the cliff toward the hedgerows, where nobody needs to keep anything burning.
