Ladybird with Big, Middle and Little Sis on foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Three panels show the same ladybird tattoo on the top of a foot, with black script beside it reading Big Sis, Middle Sis and Little Sis in turn. The ladybird has black outlines, red wings with black spots and soft shading. The script is solid black lettering with a flowing, cursive stroke, and the compositions are close and consistent across the panels.

Every Friday the three Hollin girls walked down to Cragmoor platform to meet the four-ten, and every Friday a ladybird was already waiting on the fence post by the ticket hut. Agnes, the eldest, swore it was the same one each week. Mary said that was nonsense, since ladybirds did not live through a winter, but she always checked her collar for it before the whistle went.

Their mother had told them the old rule. A ladybird that chose you would walk to the eldest first, then the middle, then the least, and whichever sister it left last would be the one to see their father off the last train home. Nobody had ever seen the rule hold, but nobody had ever seen it fail either.

The spring their father's train came in late for the last time, the ladybird arrived at the post and walked across Agnes's glove, then over Mary's sleeve, and then stopped at the top button of Peg's coat and would not be shaken off. Agnes went to Leeds that summer and Mary married the signalman's son, so Peg kept the platform swept for nineteen years, sweeping it every morning before the first train.

When the four-ten finally pulled in with a man in a brown coat on the step, the ladybird lifted from Peg's shoulder, circled the lamp once, and settled on his hat, and all three sisters were already running.
