Two photographs of matching black and grey infinity symbol tattoos with script wording and a small heart, shown on the side of the ribs.

Infinity symbol with sister quote on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show an infinity symbol tattoo with script lettering woven through the loop, one reading "there's no better friend than a sister" and the other "there's no better sister than you". A small solid heart sits in the lower left of the loop in each version. The shading fades from dark to lighter grey along the curves, and the photos are taken close up on the side of the torso against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, the fire is only warm on this side. Up at Harrow Gap the road climbs over the top and then, if you are foolish enough to take it, turns back on itself so you climb the same bend twice before you see the far valley. Ask the carters. They will tell you the road was cut by two sisters who could never agree on which way was north.

Their names were Ada and Wenna Kell, and they kept the hut at the summit with one goat and a brass bell that rang through the fog. Every winter the snow buried the lower markers, and every winter the sisters went out together with a rope tied round both their waists, because the bell alone could not be trusted to bring anyone home. Ada was quick and sharp-tongued. Wenna was slow and stubborn and never once let go of a rope she had hold of.

One March Ada took the wrong loop of the road in a whiteout, and Wenna followed her without thinking, as she always did. They stumbled through the hut door three hours later, grey with cold, each swearing the other had led them astray. The carter who found them laughed until he wept, then took a stub of charcoal and wrote across the lintel that there's no better friend than a sister. Wenna scrubbed it off the next morning. Ada wrote beneath it that there's no better sister than you, and the two of them never did settle which line was the true one.

So if you climb to Harrow Gap, mind the bend that loops back on itself, and listen for the goat bell. The road still turns twice on the same ground, and the carters say the sisters are out there somewhere, tied at the waist, still arguing about which of them kept the other safe.
