Mickey and Minnie silhouettes on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two bow-topped Minnie Mouse head outlines, one with a larger red bow with white dots and one smaller with a pink bow, beside a Mickey Mouse head shape whose ears and profile form an ampersand-like flourish. The linework is solid black with clean, even outlines and the bows are filled in flat red and pink. The design sits on a pale wrist against a dark background, with the bows adding the only colour.

Nobody on the cut could agree whose idea the bows were. My grandmother swore it was hers, the summer she repainted the name board on the Patience with a fat round-eared shape and a red ribbon tied on top. Her sister Ivy answered with a smaller one in pink, out of spite, and by the time the paint dried the two of them were barely speaking across the tiller.

The loop with the tail was my grandfather's doing. He signed every delivery note the same way, a curl that somehow looked like a head turned in profile, and when the coal merchant asked what the squiggle meant he only said, 'Two of them, and me, in the middle.' Nobody asked again.
I inherited the Patience at nineteen, when the diesel engine finally gave out and the family stopped talking about selling. I spent a wet February scraping the old board back to bare oak. The bows came off with the paint. The black outlines did not; they had soaked into the grain like ink into blotting paper, and no amount of sanding would lift them.
On the last morning of March I moored above Braunston lock and set two mugs of tea on the roof. The red bow was long gone from the wood, and so was the pink, but the ears and the curl were still there when I looked back at the board. I left it hanging where it was. Some marks belong to the boat and not to the person holding the sander.
