Small Eiffel Tower on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black Eiffel Tower silhouette sits on the outer ankle and lower leg, shown in profile with its tapering legs and arch. The tattoo is filled in solid black with minimal detail, and the skin around it is in natural daylight. The foot rests in a cream crochet slip-on on a wooden deck, with trees and water visible behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the ewes started lambing early and the back field is a bog, so forgive the state of this paper. Your postcard came on Tuesday and I found it behind the clock where your father used to hide the bills. The Tower on it is black, a shadow on a grey sky, nothing like the gold you promised in your last phone call. I think I prefer it. Your grandfather always said a thing is only its outline in bad weather, and this week the weather has been nothing but bad.

The frost has furred the kitchen window so thick I cannot see the yard, only the blurred dark shapes of the sheds. Bess sleeps across the Aga rail and steams gently whenever I open the back door. Mr Pritchard came up on Thursday with another offer for the lower field. He was very polite about it, took his boots off at the step, and left a tin of shortbread that I have not touched. I told him I would think, which is what I say when I mean no, and he knew it, and we both let it stand.

I have been meaning to tell you that I took a sheet of greaseproof paper and traced your Tower off the card, line by line, the long legs spreading out from the base, the little arch pinched in at the middle. It took most of an afternoon. Then I pinned it to the wall beside the calendar, where the lamp catches the edge of it and throws a second shadow on the plaster.

Send me a photograph of it in daylight, the real one, with a street and a bus and somebody's dog in the corner of the frame. I want to see how it sits against something ordinary. Come home for the spring lambing if the trains allow. Love, Mam.
