Lavender sprigs on the inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a bundle of lavender stems sits on the inner wrist, with several purple flower spikes rising above narrow green leaves and stems. The linework is soft and the petals and leaves use gentle shading to give them some depth. The purple and green inks are set against pale skin, with a blurred wicker basket, white vase and wooden table in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the bees, they've taken a liking to my hat. Now the Vickery garden, up past the mill at Thornbury, had a border of lavender that ran the length of the south wall, and every July old Ada Vickery would cut it with the kitchen scissors and tie it in bundles no thicker than a wrist. She never let anyone else tie them. Her knots were tight enough to hold through a winter.

The summer my story begins, her son Tom went off to the coast to work the herring boats, and he took none of the bundles with him, which she thought foolish. She hung one from the hook in the scullery anyway, upside down, the way her mother had. Every morning she looked at it while the kettle came to the boil, and every morning the stems had dried a shade greyer, and nothing came from Tom but a postcard with a gull on it.

Then in the back end of October the postman came up the lane with a parcel wrapped in brown paper and two stamps too many. Inside was a single sprig, pressed flat between the pages of a ferry timetable, and a note in pencil: Smells the same here. Forgive the silence. Ada laid the sprig on the windowsill, and the light came through it, and she sat down at the table and didn't get up until the kettle had boiled dry.
