Watercolour thistle on a lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A thistle with a purple flower head and a green stem and leaves sits on the lower leg. The flower has dark linework and soft purple washes that spread outwards into splashes, while the stem and leaves are green with fine dark outlines. Green and purple drips run down from the stem, and the plain tiled floor behind the leg keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The ferry has been cancelled for the third day running, so you walk the machair with a paper bag under your arm, looking for the last thistles of the season. Gulls hang on the wind above the dunes. Mrs Gillies has asked for purple, and not the shop-bought kind. She wants the colour that comes out of a fresh flower head when you crush it between two stones and it bleeds into the water like ink dropped in a rockpool.

Her cottage smells of linseed and wet paper. She taught the school watercolour before her knuckles stiffened, and she keeps the old pans lined up on the sill, cracked and dry as biscuits. You tip the crushed heads into a saucepan, add a spoon of salt the way she showed you, and wait. The kitchen fills with a green smell, sharp as cut stems.

She doesn't ask what you've been thinking about. She dips a brush, lays one stroke across a sheet of cartridge paper, and watches it spread outward into a splash that could be a flower or could be a squall coming over Ben Mhor. 'Thistles don't bloom for anyone,' she says. 'They just stand where the wind leaves them.'

By the time the ferry runs, the paper hangs on a line above the stove, purple heads bleeding green drips down to the bottom edge. You fold it once and carry it inside your coat. When the boat noses into the harbour you unfold it on the rail, and the wind lifts it, and for a moment it is the only thing on the island in full colour.
