LEGO Superman tattoo on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of a LEGO-style Superman minifigure with both arms raised above its head and a red cape flowing behind it. The blocky plastic shapes, studs-free body and the red and yellow Superman emblem and belt are rendered with smooth shading and clean outlines. The figure fills the centre of the frame against bare skin on the side of the torso.

The hero had been wedged down the side of the sofa for nine days, both arms straight up over his head, which was how he always stood when he wanted rescuing. Nobody had noticed. Dorota blamed the cat for everything that went missing in the flat, Felix blamed the vacuum cleaner, and the red cape, torn at one corner in the crack, was getting more ragged each time the cushions shifted.

On the tenth morning the vacuum cleaner coughed and stopped. Gran knelt on the carpet with her knees complaining and fished out a tangle of crumbs, two crisp packets, a bus ticket from 1987 and, finally, a small plastic man with a fixed grin. She held him up to the window. The light caught the yellow belt and the red shield on his chest, and she said, to nobody in particular, "Well, you're not going to lift yourself, are you?"
Felix wanted him on the mantelpiece, guarding the clock. Dorota wanted him in the bin, because the cape had a hole and she had heard it was bad luck to keep a broken hero. Gran put him on the windowsill between the geranium and the radiator, arms still raised, and told them that a man who had spent nine days reaching for the ceiling had earned a view of the sky.
That evening the cat sat on the sill and stared at him for a long time. Then it knocked him off with one paw, and he landed on the carpet with his arms still up, looking, as far as a plastic face can look anything, delighted about it.
