Superman shield on the chest

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of the Superman shield logo sits centrally on the upper chest, filling most of the frame. The emblem is rendered with realistic, highly shaded edges and a glossy, metal-like surface that gives it depth. Red and purple tones dominate the centre, with blue-grey shadows along the lower edges against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harold Pike always handed me his jacket the same way, folded over one arm like a waiter, and every Saturday he kept his hand flat over the left breast pocket until I'd given him his ticket. The cloakroom at the Majestic was a hatch no bigger than a bread bin, so I saw plenty of hands doing things with pockets. Harold's was the only one that trembled.

The thing in that pocket was a shield he had cut from the lid of a biscuit tin, filed smooth at the edges, then painted red in the middle and worked over with a purple his wife, Irene, called the colour of a bruise. He had been a welder at the yard since he was fifteen. He told me once that a shield was something you could make with your own hands when nobody was handing you anything.

On the last Saturday in October he came in without the jacket. He set it on my counter and said, 'Mind that for me,' then lost his nerve and went to stand by the bandstand. Maureen Tait from the ticket booth was dancing with a sailor. When the band struck up the slow one, Harold crossed the floor, stopped in front of her, and held out the shield where a ring should have been. She turned it over in the light, read the paint, and laughed so loudly the saxophonist dropped a bar.

I kept the jacket on its hook until the lights went up. When I finally lifted it down, the pocket was empty, and on the ledge of my hatch lay the shield, a little dented, with a note in Maureen's round hand asking me to hold it for the wedding. I still have the jacket. Nobody has ever come back to ask for it.
