The sweet pea seeds came in two brown envelopes, and by the Tuesday I had forgotten which was which. So I wrote it on my hand in biro, the way Mum used to write the shopping on her wrist: Lenny=white, Carl=black. Lenny Oduya had the plot by the water butt and a temper about his runner beans. Nobody on the allotment trusted the committee to keep a straight line, and nobody trusted Carl to keep a secret. He had told everyone about the fence post Lenny moved in March, and by June the two of them were speaking only through the secretary, like a pair of ambassadors who hated the same hotel. Then I laughed, because the white flowers had already come up in Carl's row, and the black ones, dark as a bruise, were climbing Lenny's fence. I wiped my palm on my jeans. Both packets were still in my pocket, and I could read every word on them without looking.
