Two matching traditional-style tattoos of linked hands with blue cuffs in front of an orange sun, on two forearms.

Matching linked hands and sun on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearms show matching tattoos of hands with fingers interlocked, each wearing a blue cuff, set in front of a solid orange disc. The outlines are bold and black, with simple shading on the hands and flat fills of orange and blue. The two designs sit side by side, with the right-hand tattoo partly cropped at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass closed on a Tuesday, and by Wednesday the Fallow Hart held nine travellers, a cartwright's goat, and two girls my mother put in the attic room above the bread oven because it was the only warm place left. I was sent up with blankets, expecting to be bored by them. Instead I found them cross-legged on the boards, arguing in whispers about whether a promise counts if one party is asleep.

Their names were Marguerite and Sol, though Sol said hers was short for something she would never admit. They had met at a lambing fair three days earlier and decided, with the confidence of people with nothing else to do, that they would be friends until the thaw. To seal it they hooked their little fingers, then their whole hands, knuckles locked like a gate, and swore on the orange smear of sunrise through the skylight. Their wrists were circled in blue knitted cuffs, mismatched, both unravelling at the edges.

The snow kept falling. On the fourth morning the road reopened and the goat was loaded back onto the cart. Marguerite left a note under my mother's teapot that said only: pinky swear, see you at the thaw. I kept it in the flour bin for eleven winters, and every January I checked the road for a cart that never came.

Last January I climbed the pass alone with a sack of seed potatoes. The new landlord pointed me up the stairs without looking up from his ledger. Under the skylight someone had scratched two hands into the plaster, locked together, a sun rising above them, and beside it a single date that was yesterday's. Below it, in a careful hand I knew, Sol had written: she's early.
