Leopard print and nail polish on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of black leopard print spots runs down the forearm, with a pink nail polish bottle at the top tipped so that pink polish drips down the skin. The spots are solid black and the bottle uses pink and red tones with light highlights. A hand holding a thin tool sits at the left edge against a green sleeve, with a studio chair visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell Garrity had stitched the coat herself, one black spot at a time, from a remnant of velvet she pulled out of a Leeds market bin. Her mother called it vulgar. Her sister called it the coat that ate the wardrobe. Nell called it armour, and on the Friday before the wedding she wore it to the salon on Harrogate Road, because she needed to be brave enough to ask for the bridesmaids' nails in Flamingo Fever.

Mrs Okafor, who had done nails on that street for thirty years, looked at the coat, then at Nell, and said nothing, which was worse than a comment. She uncapped the bottle of coral pink and tipped it to test the brush. A thin ribbon of colour ran over the edge of the counter and down Nell's wrist, and Nell felt the spots along her sleeve begin to lift.
By closing time there were thirty-one of them on the counter, glossy and black, hopping like sparrows towards the door. Mrs Okafor swept them into a dustpan without a word and tipped them into the bin. Nell went home without her coat and without any idea what to tell her sister.
The bridesmaids' nails were perfect on Saturday. On the inside of Nell's forearm, one spot had stayed behind, dry and black, as if it were waiting for her to decide which way she was going.
