Glitter swirl design on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm carries a scrolling, swirl-shaped design in shimmering lilac and silver. The curls are built from thin, feathered strokes with a glittery, metallic finish, and they rise from the lower edge of the frame toward the top. The plain pale skin and dark background make the sparkle of the design stand out, and it appears to be a temporary glitter design rather than an inked tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came sideways off the canal at ten past eleven, and you had the tarpaulin half down before the first customer had finished asking for a unicorn. Your jam jars of lilac and silver gel sat on the trestle, brushes fanned out like cutlery, and the kids from the bus shelter were already dripping at the edge of the awning. The woman who wanted a swirl was older, with a umbrella she kept folding and unfolding as if it had personally offended her. She said she wanted something that would survive a wet Saturday. You told her glitter never survives a wet Saturday, and she said that was why she had come to you.

You drew the first curl slowly, letting the brush wander up from the bottom of the design the way her husband used to draw loops on the steamed-up window of the café opposite. She told you that without being asked, and then looked embarrassed about it. The rain drummed on the tarp. The gel caught the grey light and threw it back in tiny, stubborn sparks. When the scroll reached the top she tilted her head and said it looked like the notes he used to scribble in the margins of the crossword, and you said nothing, because the brush was still moving.

It was gone by Monday, as you knew it would be. She came back the next Saturday anyway, and the one after that, and each time you drew the same curl again, the wandering line rising from the lower edge toward the top. By March the sketchbook under your till had three pages of it, all in pencil, none of them quite the same.

On the last wet Saturday before the market moved indoors, she didn't ask for anything. She just stood under the awning while you packed the jars away, and watched the rain run off the tarp into the gutter, where the lilac gel from her own afternoon had left a long, silver spiral sliding slowly toward the drain.
