Leopard print tattoos on arm and shoulder
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The left photo shows a black and grey leopard print of rosettes covering an upper arm and shoulder, with the lines and shading kept simple and even. The right photo shows a larger coloured leopard print in blue and dark teal rosettes on a pink and red background, covering a shoulder and upper back with soft shading inside each spot. Both images are cropped to the tattooed skin, with no faces visible, and the two shots sit side by side against plain backgrounds.

The safe house in Ostend had a carpet the colour of old bruises, and Marguerite spent the first hour pacing it while the rain worked at the window. Tomas had the radio on low, tuned to a dance station out of Brussels, and kept time to it with two fingers on the table. Every rosette on the carpet, she decided, looked like something the landlord had stamped there in a hurry, a leopard print a generation past its sell-by date.

The envelope came at midnight, slid under the door by a boy who ran off before she could ask his name. Inside was a photograph of a painting, a hunting scene, and on the back, in a hand she recognised, the words the leopard does not change its spots, and then a second line crossed out so hard the pen had torn the paper. Tomas read it twice and laughed without any sound at all.
By three they had worked out the code. It was not in the painting but in the spots themselves, which were not spots but a map, each ring a street, each dark centre a door. Marguerite traced the route with a fingernail and found it ended at a tailor's shop in Bruges that had closed in 1974, the shutter still painted the same teal as the paper's ink.
They drove there through the sleeping flatlands with the heater roaring. The shutter was open. Inside, on a dressmaker's form, hung a coat in pink satin, its lining spotted blue and green with rosettes, and a note pinned to the collar that read: wear it, they will look at the coat and never at you.
