Black and grey fine line script tattoo reading let go let God across the back of a hand's finger, resting on a thigh.

Let go let God script on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close black and white photograph of a hand resting on a bare thigh, with the fingers curled over the leg. Thin, cursive lettering reading let go let God runs across the back of the hand between the index and middle fingers. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the soft focus and natural light keep the emphasis on the small script.

Dear Tom, the ink in this pen is going, so forgive the wobble. Your father's chisel is still on the bench where you left it, the gulls have got into the bait shed again, but the boat is fine. Mrs Pascoe from the chandlery asked after you twice on Tuesday, and I told her you were learning to be a proper Londoner, which made her laugh into her teacup.

Something I haven't told you. The winter your dad went out with the Mary Ellen, I sat at the kitchen table with the hem of his jersey in my lap, trying to mend a hole that wouldn't close. Every time I pulled the thread tight, the wool puckered. Bev Hocking came round with a loaf and sat with me, and she said, 'Stop hauling, love. Ease the needle and let it lie.' I didn't understand her then. I think I do now.

So here is my advice, and you can throw it in the harbour if you like. Your gran wrote it on the lid of the tea caddy, and I copied it onto the back of the bread bag so I'd have it on bad mornings: let go, let God. The sea doesn't need you to strangle the rope. It needs you to feed it out.

The boat's still tied fast. I went down this morning and checked the knots myself. Come home when you can, and bring that friend of yours who doesn't eat fish.

Love, Mum
