Let Go Let God script with cross on foot
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black handwritten phrase reads let go, then a black cross with a small red heart at its centre, then let god, running across the foot. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the red heart is the only colour in the design. The photograph is taken at an angle, with the tattoo sitting across the centre of the frame and a plain wall behind the foot.

I had the brake lever under my palm and a crowd of lads behind the rope, waiting for their turn.

The bolt on car six had sheared. His voice came down the cable in pieces: hold it, Mar, just hold it. So I held it. My fingers went numb around the cold steel and the car creaked overhead, and every instinct told me to haul back and be finished. In the van, Gran's tin of loose buttons sat on the shelf with a card propped against it, her handwriting gone brown at the edges. Let go, let God. She'd meant it about worry in general, not a ride worth four hundred quid. But the weight was pulling, and what I was gripping was never going to hold it alone.
I let go. The lever ticked back a notch, then another, and the car sank onto the safety chain with a clang that rolled across the field and died against the hedge. Nobody was hurt. The lads cheered like it had been staged. Dad came down the ladder wiping his hands on his jeans and looked at my palm, printed white with the shape of the handle, and didn't say a word for a long time.
Then he took the red marker from behind his ear, the one he uses on inspection tags, and drew a tiny heart on the back of my hand under the torchlight. Here, he said, handing me the light. You do the next one.
