Black script lettering tattoo reading 'He is jealous for me' across a forearm, set against a blue background.

Script quote 'He is jealous for me' on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with a single line of black script lettering reading 'He is jealous for me', running from the wrist side towards the elbow. The linework is fine and even, with flowing joins and a slight slant, and the letters are solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the blue background fills most of the frame, so the lettering stands out clearly.

Holme Wick had not seen a flood like it since the war, and by the third morning the whole village had an opinion on Joseph Carr. He had stood on the bank below the mill through the whole storm, holding a paraffin lamp above the brown water and calling out to every shape that moved on the far side. Nobody thought much of it until Ada Pell came out of the Dog and Partridge at dawn, soaked to the knees, with the Brim boy's coat round her shoulders.

'Whatever's the matter with him?' asked Mrs Hobbs at the pump. Ada wrung her hair out over the trough and did not look up. 'He is jealous for me,' she said, and went on up the lane as though that settled the matter. Mrs Hobbs repeated it in the shop, and by noon it had reached the vicarage, where it was agreed that jealousy was a sin, though one that did not seem to have hurt anybody yet.

Ada had not been stranded at the mill for love or for spite. She had gone to fetch her mother's ledger from the office when the bridge planks gave way, and she had been cold and frightened and sure she would drown, until a light appeared on the bank and would not go out. It was the same lamp she had watched bob through the sleet on every night she walked home from the bus, and it was the only thing in Holme Wick she had ever been certain of.

Joseph came to the door that evening, grey in the face, and asked her plainly whether she would marry him or not. She told him yes before he could finish. The lamp still hangs by their back door, its glass blackened on one side, and when anyone asks why a grown man keeps a flood lamp lit in June, Ada says it is only the jealousy, and that she has grown fond of the company.
