Marmalade will tell you he has never been sick in his life, which is a lie he has been telling since Tuesday. He will sit at the bottom of the wardrobe and refuse his tin, and you will feel terrible about it. Don't. He is sulking, not dying. Give him an hour on the cold tiles and he'll come round.

The trick is the one Dad showed me the year the vet first said the word kidney. Lay your hand flat over his face, fingers across the brow, thumb tucked under his chin, and keep still. Don't stroke him. Stroking makes him think of play. Just hold. Within a minute the purring starts up like an engine turning over in a cold car, he goes boneless, and his eyes close as if someone has pulled a blind down.

The wet food is in the fridge door, the spare key is under the frog by the gate, and the fern on the sill needs watering on Thursdays, not Wednesdays, whatever the label says. Ring the surgery if he stops eating for two days. Ring me sooner if you're frightened.

I'll be back Sunday. Tell him I'm sorry I left him with someone who isn't me, and that he is the only creature I know who can make me stay put in a room.
