Libra scales symbol on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a Libra-style symbol, with a circular arc above a horizontal bar and a curved line below, sits on the inside of a wrist. The lines are thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin tone and blue-grey background are neutral, and a white sleeve cuff sits at the top of the frame.

The brass scales hung on a nail in the potting shed for thirty-one years, and nobody in our family used them for anything but weighing windfalls. Grandad said a fair crop was a matter of honest measurement. He would stand a pan of Bramleys on one side and a flat lump of lead on the other, squinting the way other men squint at a horse they mean to buy.

The summer the blight came up through the lower terrace, Dad wanted the whole row of tomatoes on the bonfire. Mum said wait. She fetched the scales down and filled one pan with the sound fruit and the other with the spotted, and we stood there in the heat, both of us watching the little arm of the beam. It did not tip the way I expected. It settled, slow, to a level line, as if the answer had been sitting in the pans all along and only needed someone to ask.
So we kept the sound ones and cut out the rotten. Mum said the weighing had not changed the tomatoes, only shown us where the line was. Dad went quiet, then carried the bonfire pile to the compost heap instead.
Nine years on, I still hang the scales where Grandad did. When I have to decide something I cannot see my way through, I weigh it in my head, one thing against another, and wait for the bar to come level. It takes longer than it used to, but it has never once lied to me.
