Gemini zodiac symbol in brush strokes
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink brush drawing of the Gemini zodiac symbol, made of two thick vertical strokes joined by a curved horizontal stroke at the top and another at the bottom. The strokes taper at their ends and show dry-brush texture, with solid black fills and feathered edges. The design is isolated on a plain white background with no skin or body part visible.

The lock at Stoke Wharf has jammed again, and Dinah is swearing at the paddle gear while you stand on the cill with the windlass, watching the two black narrowboats wait side by side in the grey water. They were built as a pair at the same yard, with the same signwriter and the same green roof. Nobody on the towpath can tell which is which unless they look at the tiller.

Your father used to say the river had two banks and a boat needed both to go anywhere. He said it the summer you were nine, when the two of you rowed a borrowed dinghy into the reeds and came back arguing about who had pulled harder. You still argue about it. Dinah says it was her. You say it was the current, which is the sort of answer that earns a clip round the ear from someone who has been steering since she could barely reach the wheel.
The gate groans open at last. Dinah climbs aboard the left-hand boat and you take the right, and for a mile the two of you cruise apart, two dark hulls laid down on the water like strokes of ink. Where the towpath dips under the old brick bridge, the channel narrows so tightly the hulls nearly touch. You both lift your hands from the tillers at the same moment, which is the closest you have come to agreeing all year.
Beyond the arch the water opens wide again. You let the boat drift until the two of you are level, and for a moment the sky is a single grey sheet with two black shapes mirrored beneath it, and you cannot quite tell which one is yours.
