Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm tattoo of the words Life goes on in bold black blackletter script, with a thin black heartbeat trace running behind and through the lettering. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the photo is taken at a slight angle from above. A red and black paracord bracelet sits on the wrist below the tattoo.

The echo sounder has been drawing the same jagged line since Peterhead, and you watch it from the wheelhouse step with a mug going cold in your hand. On the screen the seabed rises in little spikes, a ridge, a dip, another ridge, the sort of wobble a hospital monitor makes over a bed. Dougie always said the old plotter looked like a pulse, and that a boat was only ever a hull that happened to float.

Dougie's boat was the Morag Rose, forty feet of blue hull with a hatch that stuck in the cold. When the winch seized off the Dogger in February, it was you who went down the ladder with the spanner, and you who came up with his palm laid open on the rail. He laughed through the blood. Life goes on, he said, grinning the way old Skipper Haig used to, then spat over the side and went back to hauling.

Eleven months later the Morag Rose was sold to a yard in Lowestoft and the blackletter on her transom was sanded clean. You still have the printout Dougie gave you, folded into the back of your logbook. Its line runs straight across the paper in stubborn black ink, catching every rise of the bottom. You tap it with a finger now, the way you'd check a wrist for a beat, and the fleet goes out on the tide without you. You find you don't mind watching it leave.
