The palette is mainly teal, blue-green and grey, and the scene curves across the upper arm and shoulder.

The lamp had gone dim by the time the clouds broke over the Farne, and Tobias Greaves knew the Marianne Kell would be standing in on the flood before the moon was properly through. Below him the sea came in white across the skerries, slapping the rock the way it had every night for nineteen years.

Through the glass he could see her, a tall barque with her topsails reefed down to rags, heeling toward the shoals as if nobody had told her. Her master would be reckoning by the last fix, trusting a light that was no longer burning as bright as it should. Tobias trimmed the wick with his thumb and forefinger, poured the oil, and struck the flint twice before the flame caught and climbed.

The beam swung out over the water and the moon came up behind it, silver through the cloud, and the stars that had been hiding began to show in the gaps. When the clockwork stuck he kept the great lens turning by hand, counting each sweep aloud the way his wife had taught him to count stitches. Ten minutes later the barque's bow swung away from the Carr and her canvas filled with a sound he could hear even over the wind.

When the relief boat crossed at dawn, the boy at the oars asked whether anything had come close in the night. Tobias handed him the logbook. Under the date he had written only: Ship cleared the Carr. Moon out. Lamp burned to the end.
