Like a wave lettering on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated person in ripped blue denim rests a hand with black nail polish on one knee, with the forearm extending down the frame. Black lettering on the forearm reads LIKE A WAVE, with the words above partly cut off by the frame. The letters are thin, plain and evenly spaced, with a small amount of shading, and the photo is taken from above against a mosaic pavement.

Dear Mags,

The mosaic outside the Sealark has come up again after the high tide, all those little grey and white stones like a spilt box of teeth, and I thought of you sitting on the wall with your knees up, refusing to come in until Mr Penhale had finished his crossword. You always said the sea wanted its tiles back.
Aunt Ivy's room is still as she left it. I have not moved the brass bed or the postcards of Bournemouth pier. Yesterday a girl came down to the desk asking for the key to number six, with paint on her fingers and a notebook under her arm, and said she was researching how the town had changed. I told her the town had only ever changed its hats. She laughed and wrote something down, and I could see she was copying the words Ivy painted on the lintel the summer of the great storm, the ones nobody can make out properly now: LIKE A WAVE.
I never understood what Ivy meant. I took it for a sort of lecture, like be steady, or do not sulk. But she told me once that you do not fight a wave, you let it lift you, and then you put your feet down where the sand is firm. I wish I had listened before you went north.
Come home at Michaelmas if you can. The rooms are cold, but the sea is loud enough to cover the pipes. Leave the tide tables on the hall table where I will see them.
Love, Nell
