Lilac sprig and leaf on the lower leg
Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A cluster of lilac blossoms and a large shaded leaf wraps around the front of a lower leg above the ankle. The flowers are outlined with fine linework and the leaf is built up with smooth grey shading, giving it a realistic, dimensional look. The flowers on the right side carry a warm reddish-brown tone, while the left side stays in greys, and the plain background keeps the focus on the design.

The lilac had come over the towpath wall again, a whole shoulder of it, and the bridge at Hollins Lock was barely wide enough for the Wren Ellen without its branches scraping the paint. You stood on the gunwale with the bow saw and told yourself it was only a morning's work. Grandad would have had it cut back by seven and been halfway to the next pound before the kettle boiled.

He always said the bush grew lopsided because it wanted the sun more than the shade. The bloom on the sunny side came out heavy and warm, the bunches so thick the bees gave up on them by June, while the shaded half stayed pale and grey as the cut stone of the lock wall. You thought for years he was talking about the bush. It was a long time before you understood he meant the two of them, him on the sunny side of the cabin roof and Nan on the other, never quite touching in the middle of the boat.
The saw jammed on a knot near the top. You worked it free and a clutch of blossom dropped onto the deck, pale on one side, faintly rust on the other. You picked up the biggest sprig, the one with a leaf still hanging from its stem like a hand-cut shadow, and tucked it behind the tiller where he used to keep his pencil.
At the lock, the keeper's boy waved you through. The bridge cleared with a hand's width to spare. You didn't look back at the bush. You looked at the sprig, and the water ahead, and the boat moved on without asking anybody's leave.
