She'd sit on the low wall by the bins with a biro and a paper napkin and draw whoever walked past. Never once looked down at the page. Just followed the nose, the chin, the long hair falling back as if it had somewhere to be. Old Mr Adebayo from flat forty said she drew him with a crown of bay leaves, and he wore it to his wife's funeral, because he said it was the only thing anyone had ever given him that made him look like he'd won something.

The winter the council painted the stairwells the colour of weak tea, Ida drew a woman in a wreath and pinned it inside the lift. Nobody could say who she was. Ida said she was whoever you were before the lift stopped going up.

Ida moved out in spring. The napkin is still there, taped behind the lift door, the line never breaking, its ends running off the edge of the paper as if it means to keep going. Press the button for eleven. You'll see.
