Line profile and leaves on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line traces an abstract profile outline across the forearm, with a few small sketched leaves and sprigs beside it. The linework is thin and slightly wobbly, with no shading, and the ink sits in dark grey-black on tanned skin. The shot is a close crop in soft daylight, with the rolled sleeve and grey trousers framing the arm against a pale background.

The line had to run from brow to chin without lifting, Lysandra said, and the boy Stratos had already failed it twice. His stylus skipped across the wax at the nose and left a gap like a dropped stitch. Outside, the midday light lay flat on the harbour wall of Kos, and a clay jar on the sill held sprigs of wild thyme for the smell they gave the room.

The commission had come from a fishmonger's widow who wanted her husband's face on a grave stele, and she wanted it done before the sea took the last of the autumn boats out. Lysandra would draw it first in one unbroken stroke, so the mason could cut what she had drawn and not what he imagined. She had done it for a dozen men already. The profile always came out a little wobbly at the lower lip, because men's mouths never sat still for long, and she never once smoothed it away.
When the widow arrived she stood over the tablet for a long time without speaking. Then she laughed, short and surprised, and said he had never once kept his mouth that shut in life. Lysandra added the crown last, three quick strokes of laurel and then a spray trailing off the brow, as if the plant had grown there while nobody was watching.
Stratos picked up the stylus when the widow had gone. He drew the profile down the wax in a single pull, and at the lip his hand shook and the line bent. He looked up, ready to be scolded. Lysandra only nodded and told him to leave it exactly where it fell.
