Single line sprig on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A man wearing a white shirt with the sleeve rolled up shows a black fine line tattoo on his forearm. The design is a single continuous wavy line that ends in a small cluster of leaves and a tiny abstract mark. The photograph is taken in warm daylight against a plain pale background, with the arm filling the right side of the frame.

The river never ran straight for me, which is why Aunt Morag gave me the pen. She said a line should wander the way water does, slowly, asking permission from every stone. I was nine and wanted ruler-straight roads like the ones in the atlas, but she made me trace the Tarbet burn on butter paper until my wrist ached.

By thirty I was drawing coastlines for the county council, and nobody asked me to lift the nib. Then a surveyor sent back a diary he'd found pinned to a gatepost above Kinloch, with a sprig of bog myrtle pressed inside, gone grey at the edges. The note said only: found this where the path gives out. I didn't know who had left it, or why my map had stopped at that exact spot.
So I went. The path ran between two dry-stone walls in the same loose wander Morag had taught me, and where it gave out I found a clump of myrtle still smelling of resin, growing beside a flat stone with a small cross scratched into it. I sat on the wet grass with my pencil and let the line take me the rest of the way down to the water.
I came home and inked it fine, one unbroken pass from the cliff edge to the leaves, and at the end I put a tiny mark where I'd stopped to rest. Morag would have called it a full stop. I call it the place where the map admits it doesn't know everything.
