Line, triangle and circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a small black tattoo on the inner forearm, made up of a vertical bar, an outlined triangle and an open circle set in a row. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a plain background with a striped sleeve at the right edge.

Dearest Hettie,

The sea has been taking the cliff at Gull Head a foot a year since I came up here, and the Ordnance men say the bench mark will be in the water by the next survey. I have spent three days fixing the triangle station against the church spire at Lowmouth, sighting through the theodolite until my eye ached, while the landlady of Ferncliffe House left my supper under a cloth so it would not go cold.
Her name is Mrs Quested, and she keeps a ledger of every guest the way other women keep the hymn numbers. She asked what the three marks on my sketchbook meant. I told her a line is a plumb drawn true, a triangle is a station that holds still while everything else moves, and a circle is the horizon, which you may walk towards for ever and never stand upon. She wrote that down too, I think, though she made no comment.
On the last evening fog came in off the water and we could not see the spire, so I lit the lamp and took the bearing by feel, the way my father taught me on the Mersey flats. When the fog lifted at dawn the three points lay exactly where the numbers said they should. I sent the figures to London by the first post.
I am posting this letter with the sketch folded inside. Keep it in the tin with the ribbons. If the station is ever lost, you will know where to start looking, and you will know I was not guessing.
