Imke had eleven minutes left on the scrubber shift and spent them pretending the bean vines could hear her. Dara was on the far side of the lettuce rows, stripping runners with the careless speed she brought to everything, and when the night lamps dimmed she came round the end of the trellis with her hand held out, little finger crooked like a question.

Nine years out, the council said, and nine years was nothing. Dara said it the way she said everything, as though the future were a door she could kick open. Imke hooked her finger round Dara's, the same grip they had used since they were six and swore on the bottom of a seed tray. Neither of them had ever broken one. Neither had thought about what breaking would look like, because on a ship of four thousand people there was nowhere to go but round the same ring.

The allocations came through in spring. Dara was posted to reactor watch on the lower spine, Imke to the cold deck where the seed vaults hummed at minus eighty. For years they met only at the fourth-hour bell, two fingers linked through the mesh of the transfer hatch, saying very little. Imke kept a ledger of every bean she logged. Dara kept her promises in her own way, leaving sealed packets of sugar in the hatch cup.

When Kepler Reach finally swung its nose towards a sun that was no longer a point of light, the whole ship crowded the observation deck. Imke pushed through elbows to the glass and found, scratched small in the frame beneath the window, two sets of initials and a crooked little hook. She pressed her finger against the cold pane, and across the crowd Dara's finger came up to meet it.
