Old Marta kept her ink in a cracked dish on the sill of the mill house at Lower Hedge, where the lane gave up and the forest began. Each October the charcoal men brought her soot, and she worked it with pine resin and river water until it lay on the slate as black and still as a pond at midnight. She sold no brushes, only ink, and the village said she was keeping something back.

One dry summer a stranger came down the lane with a wooden case under his arm and asked for a brush that would hold a line through a storm. Marta looked at his palms, roped and raw, and asked what he meant to write. He would not say. She took a badger-hair brush, dipped it once, and made a single stroke that rose, folded back on itself, and ended in a point like a raised sting. The stranger paid in silver and carried the brush into the trees without looking back.
He returned at the first frost with the case empty and his hands no longer raw. He said the forest had kept what he had carried into it, every bad debt and every hard word, and had given him back nothing but a long quiet. Marta wiped the slate and asked him nothing. Later, when the charcoal men came for their soot, she showed them the stroke still bright on the paper pinned above her sill, and told them not to touch it.
