Sugar skull tattoos on two fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two ornamental sugar skulls are tattooed on adjacent fingers, each with a large skull face, scrolled filigree and small dotted details. The linework is fine and shaded in black and grey, with soft shading giving the skulls depth. The fingers fill most of the frame against a blurred background, with a decorative ring visible at the lower left.

Dear Tomás, the moulds came back from the carver on Tuesday, and Aunt Piedad has been up since four pressing sugar into them. Forty skulls in all, each cheek grooved deep enough to hold a dot of cochineal, and every scroll on the brow piped by hand so that no two are alike. She says the filigree is only there to keep the eye busy while the sweetness does its work. I told her the village children would eat the lot before dusk, and she told me to hush.

The ones with the dotted borders are for the wood. You know the stump past the chapel, where the beeches give way to bracken and the path goes soft after rain. We carry them out in a basket lined with cloth, set them in a ring on the bark, and say the names of the people we have lost, one name to each skull. Father Ruiz says the foxes are the only ones who read them properly, and I am inclined to believe him, because the basket comes back empty every spring.
This year I counted thirty-nine on the stump at dusk. When I went back at first light there was one left, the largest, with our mother's name in careful piping across its jaw, and beside it a single marigold pressed flat on a beech leaf. I have no idea who put it there, and the fox does not make offerings. I have kept the flower folded in this letter so it will reach you intact. Come home before the frost and bring the good knife. Your sister, Inés.
