Lion wearing a crown on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A lion's face with a full orange mane sits beneath a red and gold crown decorated with jewels and fleur-de-lis details. Green grass blades rise across the lower part of the design. Soft shading and blended colour give the fur and face a realistic, three-dimensional look against the skin.

Dear Nell, you can stop asking whether the old lion really wore the crown to the harvest fair, because he did, and Mrs Ferris has the photograph pinned above the cider press to prove it. The crown is back in its velvet box now. Sovereign took it off the cushion himself on Tuesday, pushing at the lid with his great head until it tipped onto the grass under the Bramley trees, and he lay there with it for three days like a dog with a stick.

The boys say it's bad luck to take a crown off a lion, but Mr Pargeter says it's only a hat, and a lion has every right to a hat in August. I went out at dusk with a bucket of windfalls, meaning to coax him in, and found him still in the long grass with the crown pushed down over one ear, the red velvet gone pink in the evening light. Half the apples had split where he'd lain on them. He looked at me the way Father used to look at the sea, as if he was deciding whether it was worth the trouble.
I sat down beside him, and we watched the sun go behind the Pippin trees together. I don't know how long we stayed there. When the first pickers' lamps came bobbing up the lane he got up, shook the crown loose, and walked it straight back to the tack room door, where it sat waiting for the morning. Mr Pargeter found it on the step and said nothing at all, which is how I knew he'd seen.
Anyway, come up for the picking in September. Bring your good boots, the orchard is thick with wasps, and Sovereign has taken a liking to the new girl who sells the eggs. Your loving brother, Tom.
