My cousin Shauna did lates at the bakery on Ferris Road and slept through the afternoons with a tea towel over her eyes. I did the early shift at the laundrette, so our paths only crossed on the landing at seven, when she was coming in and I was going out, both of us grey with tiredness and smelling of different things, bread and bleach.
One Tuesday the calendar said Live by the sun in Nan's wobbly capitals, with two arrows drawn under it pointing in opposite directions. Underneath, smaller, Love by the moon for Shauna. I stood there reading it with my keys in my fist. Nan had been dead five weeks. Her handwriting had kept coming anyway, because the calendar was still on its nail and nobody had the heart to take it down.
Shauna came up the stairs at ten past seven with flour on her cheek. I held the calendar out. She read it twice, then laughed the short way she laughed at funerals, and said Nan always did reckon the moon was the one that kept you up. We stood on the landing until the pale light came through the stairwell window, and neither of us went to bed.
