Fine line black script tattoo reading live free on the upper chest, beside the strap of a grey tank top.

Live free script on the upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line script tattoo reads live free, with a looped, hand-lettered feel, placed just below the collarbone near the shoulder. The lines are thin and dark, appearing black or dark blue-grey against the skin. The soft-focus photo is cropped close, with the grey fabric of a tank top filling the lower and right parts of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling on the Hollin Fell Inn since Tuesday, and by Thursday Agnes Whitlow had run out of patience with the boiler and most of it with the guests. Only Ruth Darnell was left, perched at the end of the bar with a stub of pencil behind one ear, copying lines onto the back of a beer mat in a loose, looping hand that kept leaning toward the window.

Agnes wiped the brass taps and watched her for a while before asking what she was writing. Ruth turned the mat over. Two words, looped and fine, the letters tipped as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere. Live free. She said she'd been trying to write something she could carry home that wasn't printed on a fridge magnet or a tea towel. Agnes read it twice and said it was a lot to ask of a beer mat. Ruth laughed, the first real laugh in three days, and said beer mats were all she had.

The plough came up the lane before dawn on Friday. By the time Agnes came down, the bar was empty, the fire banked, and Ruth's rucksack was gone from the coat hooks. The pencil lay on the bar beside a note weighted with a salt pot: keep the mat, it's yours now.

Agnes propped it on the sill of the front window, where the road would appear first over the rise. By noon the lane was clear, the sky the colour of skimmed milk, and the pencil lines had softened in the warmth off the radiator, the words still standing against the glass.
