Tabby cat portrait with sunset silhouette on calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large tabby cat's face with bright green eyes and detailed whiskers fills the upper part of the design. Below it, a dark silhouette of a seated cat sits in front of trees and an orange and yellow sunset sky. The shading is smooth and photographic, with the fur rendered in grey and brown tones and the sky in warm colour.

Nell Brackley had never wanted a cat, but the tabby came aboard at Aldwick Bottom lock with a torn ear and a look of having already decided. She called him Sergeant because he sat on the roof like he was inspecting it. In the evenings they moored below the willows where the towpath bends, and the sun went down behind the far bank in bands of orange and butter yellow. Sergeant would climb to the cabin roof, settle with his tail wrapped round his feet, and watch the water with his green eyes narrowed to slits, as if the canal owed him an explanation.

That autumn her hands stopped working properly and she spent most days on the bunk with the stove ticking. Sergeant stopped going out with the mornings. He lay against her knees instead, purring like a kettle left on low, and when the light came in sideways through the porthole he would get up and stare at the window until she managed to lever herself upright to look too.
On the last clear evening of October she woke and the cabin was empty. She found him on the towpath a hundred yards back, sitting on the path in the gold light with his back to her, facing the sun and the dark trees beyond it. He did not turn when she called. She went down the bank one careful step at a time and sat beside him on the cold stones. Together they watched the sky go from orange to rose to a grey that swallowed the reeds. When she finally reached for him he leaned into her hand, warm and certain, and only then did she understand that he had been keeping watch for her, the way he had kept watch over the water all along.
