Looped knot symbol on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a woman's ankle and heel with a single black outline tattoo. The design is a looped knot-like symbol made of three rounded lobes with a small loop rising above them. The thin, even linework is set against bare skin, with the lighting and a soft white background keeping the focus on the tattoo.

Brother Aldo has set you to the margins this week, which means you get the knots nobody else wants. The abbot likes his gospels crowded with interlace, and you have never minded the tedium of it. Your pen is cut from a goose quill that Sister Edith sharpened for you in the warm room, and the ink has gone thick in the cold, so you breathe on the pot before every stroke.

The trouble begins with the little loop at the top of the knot-wheel the old exemplar shows. Nobody in the scriptorium can say whether it closes or floats. You try it three ways on a scrap of vellum and get three answers, and the candle gutters over the lot. Brother Aldo tells you that a line never lifted from the page will always find its own way home. You think that is the sort of thing said by men who have never had to scrape a mistake off calfskin with a knife.

So you do it his way anyway, letting the pen run the three lobes without once lifting it, and the small loop rises over them like a bird settling. It is the first thing you have drawn all winter that does not need correcting. When the abbot passes at vespers he stops, tilts his head, and says nothing at all, which from him is praise. You fold the scrap into your sleeve and keep it there, because it is the only page you have ever made that was entirely yours.
