Lotus flower tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A lotus flower with soft, petal-like shapes is tattooed on the shoulder and upper chest. The petals are outlined with fine dark lines and shaded with grey washes that fade toward the edges, giving a brush-painted look. Small red accents mark the centre, and the flower sits against plain skin with a dark knitted garment and wooden cabinet in the background.

The oven had been lit for an hour before Agnes thought to look at the clock, and by then the back room smelled of scorched sugar and the first proof of the day. She stood over the marble slab with a fine brush in one hand and a bowl of thinned icing in the other, trying to paint the lotus her grandmother had painted on every Sunday cake in the village. Her first petals bled into one another like ink on wet newsprint.

Hollis Rowe, who had run the ovens on Sallow Lane since before the war, came in tying his apron and said nothing about the mess. He took the brush, dipped it, and wiped most of the colour off against the rim. 'Less water,' he said. 'The petal wants to be thin at the edge. It's the edge that makes people think it's floating.' He drew one stroke and lifted, and the petal came out pale grey, darker at the base where the brush had rested.
She tried again while the trays cooled. The red centre came last, a single dab of beetroot colour pressed into the middle of the bloom, and it looked suddenly like a heart that had been kept too long in a drawer. Rowe stood behind her as the window greyed over the car park, and the first delivery van pulled in with its headlamps still on.
When the van left with eleven boxes, she noticed one cake set apart on the shelf, its petals fading out into the paper. Rowe had tucked a card under it that read 'for the woman who never buys anything'. Agnes did not ask who she was. She only knew the lotus had been finished with less water than she wanted, and that was why it held its shape.
