Lotus mandala on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower with layered petals and a dotted ornamental centre sits above a long, vertical line of dots and small filigree motifs. The linework is fine and the shading uses dense dots and light grey tones. The left panel is a close-up of the calf, and the right panel shows the same design on a full lower leg against a patterned damask wall.

Edie had been on her knees since six, working Brasso into the brass studs that ran in a dotted line from the centre of the sprung maple floor to the foot of the stage. Thirty-one of them, counting the small ones near the door. Upstairs the balcony rail was already gathering dust again, and she had only an hour before the first teacups came in.

The floor had been laid in 1931 by a man called Osgood Penn, who set a brass lotus into the boards at the centre, its layered petals cut from sheet metal and stamped with tiny dots like seed heads. Nobody danced on the lotus itself. The couples turned around it, and the old teacher, Mr Clemo, used to say the trick was to know where the centre was even when you couldn't see it.
Mr Clemo had died in March. His widow sent a cardboard box of records and a note asking whether Edie would take the Thursday tea dances, since nobody else knew the foxtrot counts. Folded small and tucked under the lid was a sheet of his squared paper, and on it, in pencil, a row of dots down the margin, one for every bar of a waltz he had never finished teaching.
On Thursday she lowered the needle onto a scratchy record, and the room filled slowly with women in good coats who had been coming since before the war. Edie stood at the edge of the lotus and counted under her breath. When the last couple had gone and the chairs were stacked, she knelt once more, pressed a new brass stud into the boards at the bottom of the line, and gave it a single rub with her sleeve.
